ArtWavEs Banner Journeys to Standing Rock, North Dakota

1 Standing Rock Peace Banner 2 KES 2016

It was the last banner we started last week, and it’s about to go on a lengthy journey in service to the Earth. At the ArtWavEs camp adventure , 25 Pacific youth from Kealakehe public housing drew their dreams, stretched silk, and painted more than 30 peace banners to bless the world.

And they didn’t want to stop.

When the idea of painting to support the tribes, families, and water protectors in North Dakota came up, the kids jumped at the chance to show their empathy. Painted in solidarity with Standing Rock children whose future is in jeopardy from “environmental genocide,” the banner is intended to support children and families in peaceful protests at Standing Rock.

They want to make this “Big Oil’s Last Stand.”

Thousands of people, including Linda Satchell and Pua Case from Hawaii Island, have joined in the protest as water protectors.

Linda is carrying the ArtWavEs banner to North Dakota on Friday to express the wishes of Hawaiian keiki and Marshall Islands children who were displaced by U. S. nuclear testing that made their homeland radioactive and uninhabitable.

Big Oil and Gas companies are attempting to build a pipeline across the Missouri River in conflict with local residents and violating sacred grounds of Dakota Sioux tribes. Worse still, a spill by the Dakota Access and Enbridge, Energy Transfer Partners corporation into the river would directly endanger Native American communities, another example of how the rights of native people are being trampled by corporate greed.

According to pediatrician Dr. Sara Jumping Eagle, the Dakota pipeline would cause “environmental genocide” among tribal members, and world opinion largely agrees. Toxic fossil fuels are no longer a tenable energy solution when solar, wind and water power sources can so quickly and cleanly be tapped.
The peace banner depicts the Marshall Islands in the upper left corner and the Hawaiian Islands in the upper right, connected by a large hand in a peace sign in the center. In the foreground, a horse and rider stand among the shapely mounds of the Black Hills.

While nurturing the children’s creative souls and sharing in the conversation about a healthier, more peaceful world, the banner illustrates hope, delight, unity, and the power of paint to help create the beautiful world we envision.

Please support ArtWavEs and the process of putting these potent tools – positive purpose, paintbrushes, silks, and vivid colors — into the hands of children and teens to empower them to paint their own reality.

Together, we’re creating a healthy, prosperous world. Thank you, donors, for your generosity. We couldn’t do this without you.
