SEASIDE YOGA TO CELEBRATE SUMMER SOLSTICE
SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 8:00 – 9:30 am
AT PU’UHONUA O HONAUNA

The Refuge Temple — Pu’uhonua O Honaunau — is a perfect space for remembering three of yoga’s main blessings: forgiveness, creativity and insight. Practicing yoga at the beautiful seaside, in the prana-rich threshold between land and ocean, creates an inner alchemy that deepens our vitality in body, mind and spirit.

In ancient times, travel to the Temple of Refuge was a “Furious Journey of Life or Death Determined by the Gods.” Imagine you had just broken the sacred laws, the kapu, and the only punishment was death. Your only chance of survival was to elude your pursuers and reach the Pu’uhonua, a place of refuge.

The Pu’uhonua protected the kapu breaker, defeated warriors, as well as civilians during the time of battle. No physical harm could come to those who reached the boundaries of the Pu’uhonua.

The refuge was built by ancient Hawaiians who knew the social value of building temples where anyone — farmers, warriors, even thieves — could find sanctuary from their troubles and restart the motor of their souls. The treasured teachings and methods of the culture were cultivated here and preserved for future generations.

In the refuge, all learned the arts of peace, relationship skills, and useful trades. The intention was to engage responsible and balanced living, not punish unskillful people At Pu’uhonua O Honaunau, everyone learned to be gentle, connected and creative.

Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is located at 1871 Trail, Captain Cook. The gate to the south picnic area is just to the left of the park visitor center.

Go all the way south in the picnic area and look for the flexitarians!

We’ll start practice at 8:00 am. Gate opens at 7:30 am. Please bring a mat and a water bottle. Call 808-345-0050 for more details.
