Kailua Kona, Hawaii – Healthy, active bodies support healthy, active minds. Add social, emotional and cognitive skills, and the path for a child can be paved with excellence. The Kona Beach Yoga Studio offers three keiki classes per week to give children these gifts and help them learn cooperation, concentration and compassion.

On Thursday, January 31, at 3 pm, Kumu Keala Ching continues his beginning level Keiki Hula classes where children learn the chanting, hand motions, footwork and basic steps that form the foundations of hula. Rhythms, storytelling and language study benefit a child’s memory, attention and overall learning ability. Kumu Keala will be teaching a second weekly Keiki Hula class beginning at 1 pm on February 9th.

On Tuesdays beginning February 5th, at 3 pm, Ashley Flemino, who recently completed nine months of intimate practice and study with Ashtanga master Norman Allen in yogic lifestyle concepts, the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, and Ayurveda, will be teaching Keiki Yoga at the studio. “These classes are created to engage curiosity, foster understanding and benefit the child’s whole being,” says Ashley.

Using visual imagery and storytelling, she guides children to relax, cope with stress, maintain self-esteem and learn to respond to school and life issues with a positive attitude. Ashley received her 200-hr. Yoga Teacher Certification at the Konalani Ashram & also offers Gentle Yoga and Yoga Dance at the studio.

All Keiki classes at the Kona Beach Yoga Studio give children, strength, flexibility and a calm attitude while improving memory and enhancing learning ability. “We want to inspire children in Hawai’i to know their culture, develop their intelligence and explore the world,” says Kumu Keala. A wide range of students, including those with ADD/ADHD, anxiety and other issues, have said that yoga and hula help them learn to handle conflicts, deal with emotions and manage impulses.

Children aged 4 – 12 are welcome to attend classes. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent for the first several classes. Classes are $12 -15 and discount kama’aina class cards are available.

The mission of the Kona Beach Yoga Studio is to enhance mental, emotional, and physical health among children and adults through the use of movement, stress management, and the connection between the brain, body, and breath. By collaborating with like-minded organizations, like the Na Wai Iwi Ola Foundation, the studio provides youth with tools that develop confidence and courage to create healthier bodies, make better decisions, develop stronger relationships, and become more successful.
