From Helplessness to Hope- Children Paint for Peace
Growing Happy Hearts at Lei Ohana
Dear Friend, Visitor, and Visionary,
“Wow, that was amazing!” said a new volunteer, still glowing after our closing circle. “Every single one of those children came in feeling hopeless, but then they tapped into something ….a deep and tender place.”
“Their genius? Their spirit?” I asked. “What is it that moves so much despair into hope? Their creativity?”
“That’s it. Yes!” she replied. “It liberates them — creativity liberates them.”
As we packed up brushes, watercolor trays, and platters where fruit, pizza, and juice had been shared, she had named the mission of my life – to inspire children, families, and future generations with the tools of creativity and intention to unlock their imagination.
Time and again, in our ArtWavEs workshops, classes, festive events, and trainings, we see imagination igniting happy hearts and the peaceful lives that will replace the fear and trauma.
All around us, we see signs of unraveling. Children’s voices silenced. Immigrants targeted. Families losing access to the medical, financial, and food support they need to sustain them. Freedom of speech itself, the freedom even to laugh, teeters in the courts and media.
It’s enough to make even the strongest hearts feel helpless.
When the world shouts fear and division, creativity can feel far away — and without it, we risk losing hope.
But here’s the truth: hope is alive in every child’s imagination.
This is what your support makes possible:
Where others sow fear, we plant joy.
Where others close doors, we open hearts.
Where helplessness sets in, we awaken creativity.
With every brushstroke, song, and circle, children and families reclaim a personal sense of agency. They remember that they are not powerless — they are creators of peace. And when they experience the collective flow of energy moving toward harmony, as they do during our events, grace lingers in the air. They recover and restore their happy hearts.
Today, at Lei Ohana, an affordable housing center in Kailua Kona, we have witnessed extraordinary leaps of personal, social and emotional intelligence. Children and families in a 6-week AWE program painted cards as gifts to others while exploring and finding new ways to live, breathe, move, imagine, help each other, and paint futures full of happy hearts.
But we can’t do it without you.
Your donation right now is more than charity.
It is a stand for freedom. A brushstroke of courage. A lifeline of hope.

From Fear to Joy — The Path We’re Building Together
Five weeks ago when we started the after school program, the children were restless — giggling, fidgeting, casting anxious glances at the clock. But as they moved, they balanced body energies and aligned their minds. Then, when brushes touched paper and colors spread — magenta, turquoise, gold — a hush fell. Faces softened. Shoulders relaxed.
Curiosity and creativity displaced anxiety.
In our left-brain dominant society, children are trained into fear, conformity, and numbness – a function of the analytical, mechanical brilliance of the left hemisphere. This imbalance leads to more trauma when the media, manipulated by greed and aggression, displaces their natural joy with fear, and they suffer.
But not here.
In the bright spaces co-created by AWE Peace Arts Guides, heartful volunteers, teachers, and extended families, ArtWavEs is restoring peace through creativity, truth, beauty, and goodness.
One boy, bent over his painting, whispered: “I am a seed of peace. This paintbrush is my magic wand.”
A 7-year-old girl who had been teased at school painted a tree with golden branches reaching toward the sky. When asked what it meant, she said: “It means I belong.”
Another child added, “We all belong.”
This is what liberation looks like: joy, fulfillment, belonging, sharing, and imagination used wisely, for connection and creativity rather than fragmentation and fear.

The Ripple Effect— You Can Make the Difference
Every child deserves a happy heart. With each brushstroke, movement, kindness circle, and shared meal, we send ripples of hope far beyond the classroom.
• Anxious children find calm.
• They discover, “I am an artist. Everyone is an artist!”
• Lonely ones feel belonging.
• Restless energy softens into patience.
• Families notice more kindness and listening at home.
These small shifts grow into a culture of care — a culture that can’t change history, but it can change the future.
Imagine if a young Adolf Hitler, rejected by art school and burning with frustration, had found a circle like this. Imagine today’s children being taught to create instead of consume.

A New Paradigm
When children paint peace, they light up the world. This is the paradigm shift: joyful love and creativity build the foundations for peace.
And this is why we need you.
Your gift brings more colors, more chants, and more shared feasts of connection into children’s lives.
Your support multiplies the ripple effect — from one child to one family, from one community to the wider world.
